Denise is teaching American Tribal Style classes--on hiatus for the summer

Join us for an exploration in the tribal style of bellydance. Denise Leclair, an experienced dancer, instructor and current artistic director of Raq-a-Belly dance! will take you on an exciting dance journey, which will include how to dance to the original American Tribal Style, originated by Carolena Nericcio of Fat Chance Bellydance in San Francisco. You will learn basic moves to this powerful dance based on Arabic, Flamenco and Indian dance moves. Moves will include fast and slow body, hip, and foot work as well as the all-important tribal body posture and the beautiful handwork and spins. A choreography will  be included as well as discussion on improvisation and the colourful costuming which accompanies the dance. Suitable for all ages and skill levels.

Contact: Denise

Your instructor:  Denise started dancing in 1995 in the San Francisco Bay Area with instructors like Alyne Hazard, Malia and with specialty workshops with Leila Haddad (in Israel), Joan Kafri, Carolena Nericcio, Khadejah and Mustapha El Oueslati (in Tunisia) and Hadia. While she loves to shimmy with Egyptian cabaret, her true love has been with folkloric and tribal styles like Gypsy and Ghawazee. Moving back to Edmonton in 2002 she discovered that tribal hadn't really arrived yet to Edmonton shores and so began the journey here...and the fun. Today, Denise has solid roots in American Tribal Style but uses those movements in choreographed tribal folkloric dances. When she isn't dancing, teaching, creating choreographies or taking Flamenco or Indian dance classes, she is probably organizing a dance event or going to one. Passion is passion. You can read Denise's article on dancing in Tunisia at Gilded Serpent, a terrific online bellydance magazine.

Jodi is teaching Beginner and Intermediate Belly Dance classes

Join our introduction to basic bellydance techniques, suitable for all ages and skill levels. The Beginner class will include an energizing warmup, proper dance posture and alignment, detailed breakdowns of classic Raqs Sharqi movements, footwork, hipwork, undulations and shimmies. Nuwayrah has extensive experience with both teaching and choreography. If you have never taken a bellydance class before and are between the ages of 15 and 100 this class is for you. Can be repeated as often as needed or desired.

Intermediate class expands on what you have learnt in Beginner class and includes layering and more complex movements.

Your instructor: Nuwayrah (Jodi) started dancing with Isis Dance of Edmonton in 2002 after already having accumulated considerable experience in musical theatre and martial arts. Although her discipline is now largely Raqs Sharqi, she has strong leaning towards Tribal Fusion style. When not teaching or choreographing, Nuwayrah can be found performing at a variety of events with Edmonton's most diverse Middle Eastern dance troupe, Raq-a-Belly dance!

Tania is teaching Basic Tribal Fusion Technique

Join Tania in exploring this sensory, darker side of bellydance. With roots in American Tribal Style, Tribal Fusion includes powerful moves to electronic music and edgy costuming. Based on the style of Rachel Brice, prepare to be challenged with a strenuous warm up and a detailed breakdown of the muscular movements. This class focuses on drilling technique for basic Tribal Fusion movements, with a strong emphasis on strengthening and stretching exercises that will aid in perfecting these movements. This class is meant for beginners, and welcomes those new to bellydance and those who are new just to Fusion Belly Dance. Though this is a Fusion class, many of the movements are similar to Egyptian bellydance, thus this class should help any beginner bellydancer to improve their technique.
Warning: you will sweat (bring water!) and you will need a yoga mat.

July 7-28 (4 weeks)

Cost: $60 per student

Technique: Mondays 7:00-8:30 pm

Contact: Tania

Your instructor: Tania started her obsession with bellydance over 5 years ago and has been performing professionally for 2 years now.  She is a founding member of Raq-a-Belly dance! and is proud to be an alumnus of Vibe Tribe. Recent years have seen her focusing her training on Tribal Fusion style (especially gothic fusion) but she believes in having a strong basis in Egyptian and Turkish styles. You have to know the rules to break them!  In order to help learn the rules, Tania has taken workshops with some of the best bellies in the business including Carolena Nericcio, Rachel Brice, Ariellah, Kami Liddle, Petite Jamilla and Sonia (Bellydance Superstars), and Nath Keo.
